How does diagnosis work?
The diagnostic process starts by looking over all the available information to make a theory. A good theory is one that explains every part of the concern in a logical way, but even a good theory needs to be tested. Testing can look vastly different depending on the theory; sometimes it requires highly specialized diagnostic equipment, other times it requires no tools at all. If the initial theory is disproven, the technician gathers all the new information to form a revised theory. This process continues until a conclusive diagnosis is reached.
How long does diagnosis take?
The amount of time it takes to diagnose a problem is entirely unpredictable, but most issues are diagnosed within an hour. In general, check engine lights, fluid leaks, and strange noises are easier to diagnose, whereas performance issues, electrical issues, and intermittent issues are harder to diagnose. Easier issues are usually diagnosed in less than an hour, a difficult issue could take several hours to diagnose.
